Medical Massage

Medical Massage at Sanctuary Therapeutic Massage is performed by a certified medical massage therapist. Medical massage is traditionally used to treat specific orthopedic injuries and to provide relief from the symptoms of illness and disease.  Medical massage covers injuries and illnesses directly under the care of a physician. Medical massage can be light, medium, or deeper pressure and often uses less oil than a traditional massage. While traditional deep tissue and relaxation massage tend to concentrate on the belly of the muscle like the widest part of the calf muscle; medical massage uses advanced training and principles of neuromuscular therapy to focus on the muscle attachments to provide a complete release. The therapist may guide you through certain stretches and may assist with stretches to help restore the proper length, range of motion, and function of muscles.

Depending on the severity of the injury or illness the therapist may require a doctor's note or your physician's contact information

Medical Massage helps many different injuries and manages the symptoms of many long-term illnesses. This is just a small example of the many people it can help:

  • * Fibromyalgia

  • * Myofascial Pain Syndrome

  • * Rotator Cuff Syndrome

  • * Sciatica

  • * Tennis Elbow

  • * Muscle Strains

  • * Sports Injuries

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage at Sanctuary Therapeutic Massage is performed by a therapist that is certified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Manual lymphatic drainage is a light massage that focuses on opening the lymphatic ducts and moving excess fluid throughout the lymphatic pathways to where it can be easily flushed out of the body. The lymphatic system is responsible for flushing out toxins such as lactic acid and waste products the body doesn’t need anymore. In a healthy individual, almost 20% of this waste material does not get flushed out. In an individual that has just had surgery or has long-term medical conditions the body can’t efficiently remove the waste and many negative health issues can arise.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been around for several millennia.  Today, cups come in several different styles and sizes to provide many therapeutic benefits. At Sanctuary we use plastic cups that are strategically placed over the muscles. The therapist uses a hand pump to remove air from the cups and creates a vacuum effect that loosens muscle tissue, reduces muscular adhesion to the fascia and floods tissues with blood and other nutrients upon removal. It creates movement of inflammation and excess lymph in the muscle tissue allowing the body to flush it out easily. Cupping was brought to popularity when Michael Phelps sported circular marks in his Olympic games. Cupping often leaves light to dark circular marks that can last for a week or two but the benefits are incredible.

Reiki Massage

At Sanctuary Therapeutic Massage we combine Reiki healing with our traditional relaxation massage. A reiki master practitioner will call healing light energy into the room and use this energy as they work different areas of your body. The practitioner may pause holding their hands over certain areas to restore energetic balance and remove blockages and heavy energy. Many clients say that they feel a warming or tingling sensation from the practitioners hands as depression and anxiety release. Clients state that a profound feeling of peace and wellbeing fill their mind body and spirit. The article below documents some of the astounding medical benefits that have been scientifically proven from reiki energy healing.
